February 18-21: The Week Ahead in English Lit. I

Overview:

We begin this week by catching up on our missed discussion of the conclusion of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Please review the questions (posted below) for our discussion.

This week we will also begin studying Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, reading them in the original Middle English.

Be sure to bring your Norton Anthologies to class and listen to the recording (for Wednesday's class) posted on the Schedule of Readings and Assignment Deadlines.

Assignments Due:

-The Timeline Quiz is on Friday. Prepare for the quiz by studying the information in the Master Timeline.

Questions to Consider for Reading and Class Discussion:

For Tuesday:

-What is the "game" that the Lord proposes he and Gawain play?

-At line 1679, the Lord says that he has "tested" Sir Gawain. What was the "test" (perhaps not as obvious of a question as it would seem!)? Did Gawain pass, according to the Lord? Does Gawain believe he "passed"? What do we think?
