October 22-25 The Week Ahead in English Lit. I

Overview:

This week we will conclude our discussion of Titus Andronicus, focusing on the text itself as well as Julie Taymor's film adaptation Titus. Please be sure to watch the film in preparation for Wednesday's class.

Assignments Due:

-Your Wikipedia Projects are due on Friday. Please bring your completed portfolios to class (see the assignment

for details about what should be included) and be prepared to give a brief presentation on your findings.

Questions to Consider for Reading and Class Discussion:

For Tuesday:

-In the opening of Act II, how is Aaron counseling Chiron and Demetrius (Tamora's sons)?

-Aaron comes up with a serious of devious (and ingenious) plans to avenge Titus. 1) What are his plans and 2) Why is he doing this?

-As part of his plan, Aaron convinces Titus to allow him to cut off his hand (!) What is symbolic about this action?

-At the close of 3.1, Where does Titus send his son, Lucius? Why?

For Wednesday:

Before you watch the film, you should review this Tutorial on interpreting the visual elements found in the film. We will be discussing the visual elements of the film as well as the way it tells the story.
